4/3/11 – Cedar Key Art Festival
So…despite living near Cedar Key, a small town located on the Gulf of Mexico, for 14 years, I’ve never been there. Apparently for quite some time, Cedar Key has hosted an annual art festival with a fairly decent juried prize. I had no idea what to expect so Lindsay and I headed over to check things out.
Normally Cedar Key has a population of about 1000 people. During the art festival, over 20,000 visit the town. As one might imagine, the roads were slightly congested. Fortunately, we managed to find parking by the side of the road after a short time driving around.
What surprised me most about the Art Festival was its size…or lack thereof. I have no idea how many booths were actually there but it seemed like there was less than 100. For an Art Festival that has run for so long I was a bit surprised about how few exhibitors there were. Something else I noted…dating someone who loves jewelry…is that most of the vendors were painters or sculptors of some sort. Very few individuals selling jewelry.
It didn’t take long to walk through the small festival so we stopped for Lindsay to eat some (in my opinion) nasty seafood…although she seemed to enjoy it. Afterwards we walked back to the car, stopping at the pier on the way, and slowly made our way home. All in all, a nice day to walk around for an hour or so and this coming weekend we have the Downtown Gainesville Art Fair to look forward to.
