3/2/11 Wednesday: And Today I Pass Out

Posted on March 3 2011 by kevin

So…today wasn’t super interesting…with the exception of me passing out. Since I’m apparently becoming “successful” it was determined that I should get some life insurance. So…the insurance company needed some blood. I was told it would be the finger prick…wrong. Upon arriving at my office, the phlebotomist cheerfully informed me that I was going to be donating two vials of blood. I cheerfully informed her I would be passing out.

So…after a 10 minute interview about my health history, no ma’am I have never had a hysterectomy, it was time. Up went my shirt sleeve, balled up my fist and….nighty night Kevin! Since I had warned her ahead of time, the technician was kind enough to catch me so I didn’t bang my head on the table even though I was sitting. I don’t remember going out…just that I thought I was singing a song.

I woozily came to with the tech saying, “Kevin…Kevin..wake up!” I was drenched in sweat, I felt nauseous, and I just wanted to lay down. After about 20 minutes I moved to the couch in my office and the tech decided that I didn’t need to give blood. Lindsay came and picked me up. I felt like I needed sugar and calories so we got a chocolate milk shake for me. I then went home and went to bed for a couple of hours.

Apparently I suffer from something known as needle shock. This affects roughly 5% of the population, in particular young, fit, males…go figure. Apparently it generally only involves nausea, headaches, and sweating but I’m the exceptionally rare case that loses consciousness…how lucky am I?
